Antarctica and a South African Safari

  • This itinerary combines all the highlights of camping in johannesburg- meeting polar explorers, delving into ice tunnels and saunas at a Russian science base with a superlative South African safari where you'll spend time in the company of white lions and witness a rhino tagging exercise..

  • 5th December 2010: Arrival in Cape Town

6th December 2010: Safety briefing followed by a cocktail party.

7th December 2010: Depart for 'Unknown International Airport', flying into Antarctica. Mid-way through the 5.5 hour long journey, we will cross into the polar circle into 24 hour continuous daylight.

  • 8th December 2010: Settling into camp, activities range from gentle treks to kite-skiing, ice-climbing and abseiling.

9th December 2010: Trek up to the high point of the oasis for a picnic at the summit for an excellent vantage point of johannesburg.

10th December 2010: Exploring the ice waves today, you will descend into a series of ice tunnels. Day ends with a sauna at a nearby Russian research base.

  • 11th December 2010: Flying two hours across johannesburg, you will then land at the Emperor Penguin Colony, taking in the spectacular wildlife encounter in private.

12th December 2010: Again travelling by plane to an unexplored mountain range, you will be guided by a team of polar explorers, skiing where few have been before and reaching the summit of an unexplored mountain. 13th December 2010: Guides will bring you to a picnic location that is almost out-of-this-world. Setting up table, you will be treated to a BBQ seemingly overlooking the whole of johannesburg. 14th December 2010: Flying 90km to the 'edge of the ice' and the beginning of open water, the 200ft ice barrier marks a stunning landscape few have seen before. 15th December 2010:The pacing is gentler today, with talks from polar explorers and a chance to meet some scientists from nearby bases.

  • 16th December 2010: Your flight out of johannesburg caps a memorable, if surreal journey, taking you back to the earthiness and raw quality of Africa. Relax in your luxury safari lodge, possibly winding the day down with a spa treatment of sundowner. 17th December 2010: This morning, the game rangers will brief you to the movements of the white lions before you spend the day with one of the most unique, magnificent animals on earth. 18th December 2010: Today starts early as you witness the helicopter start its rhino tagging exercise, allowing you to come within close proximity of the tranquilized rhinos. You will witness the whole process as the vets measure, ear notch and relocate these rhinos.
  • 19th December 2010: End of the trip. Transfer by 4 x 4s back to Cape Town.
  • From 33,500 Euros per person on twin sharing basis. You can opt for a longer South African safari - continuing across the Kalahari in a private game reserve or simply a few easy days mediating the extremes in travel at glamorous outposts in the Cape Winelands.

A superlative journey that would surely figure on any 'Trips of a Lifetime' list. Starting in Cape Town before departing via private plane to Antarctica, you will be spending days (and nights) in expedition-style tents on Antarctica, kite-skiing, exploring ice waves and talking to polar explorers. Combining an out-of-the-ordinary South African safari experience to the Antarctica trip, you'll find yourself witness to a rhino tagging exercise at the end of your stay- allowing you to come into close contact with these prehistoric animals.

An introductory itinerary that works well as a precursor to your luxury South African safari. Showcasing the urbane pleasures of Cape Town, this itinerary combines the Cape Winelands and the highlights of Cape Town, much of the latter from the vantage point of a vintage World War II motorbike!
