Cambodia Sample Itinerary

  • This itinerary starts off at the Amansara, a former holiday home of Prince Norodom Sihanouk built in the modernist style. An interesting twist takes place after, having you camping on the grounds of one of the more remote temples in Cambodia before crossing over into the Thai border and spending the night in a luxury tent evincing a colonial aesthetic with a plunge pool cum jacuzzi within. The trip ends in Bangkok at the Mandarin Oriental.
  • Day 1-3:Siem Reap- Soak in the vibe of Cambodia on your first day, and by afternoon transferring up a winding path through a jungle to the mountain temple of Phnom Bakheng (optionally on the back of an elephant), arranging to reach the summit by sunset, where a surreal glow is set over Angkor Wat. An option would be to do this in the morning when the crowds are lighter. An early/late morning visit to Angkor Wat the next day followed by a visit to Ta Prohm and Angkor Thom in the afternoon. Banteay Srei, a pretty temple of pink sandstone is scheduled for your last day in Siem Reap before you depart for Banteay Chhmar.
  • Day 3-4: Banteay Chhmar Far from civilisation and the touristy sites of Siem Reap and the Angkor Wat is Banteay Chhmar, famous for its signature faces of Jayavarman VII. You'll spend the day exploring the ruins of Banteay Chhmar, examining the carvings of Lokesvara's 32 arms and the beautiful Hall of Dancers. The outer complex sees the outer gate of Ta Prohm, protected by a moat.

You will be based in a tent tonight close to the temple of Banteay Chhmar, with a personal cook and guide with the luxury of hot water showers available in the evenings. Camping on the grounds of a remote Khmer temple has its rewards- apparent in the morning as you wake up with the sun, savouring the feeling of having the temple grounds almost literally to yourselves. You can choose to continue to explore some of the more remote outer gates and temples around Banteay Chhmar before continuing south to the enigmatic temple of Banteay Top.

After lunch, head towards Thailand, crossing the Cambodian-Thai border where you will be transferred to your lush colonial-style tent with an indoor central pool cum jacuzzi. Relax with an in-tent spa treatment tonight.

  • Day 4-5: Nakhorn Ratchasima

Opt to have breakfast served on your private verandah. Overlooking lush greenery and water bodies, this is Thailand at its most bucolic. A mere two hours from Bangkok, this lush estate is a welcome respite and a world away from the crazed pace of the capital city. Take a late morning transfer after a leisurely breakfast in your tent the next day onwards to Thailand's capital, Bangkok.

  • Day 5-6: Bangkok You'll be based in the Mandarin Oriental, with a roster of guests like John le Carre, Somerset Maugham, Gore Vidal and Norman Mailer and quite possibly the first hotel that was opened in 1828 after Thailand first re-opened its doors 140 years after it first expelled foreigners from its lands. Fringing the legendary Chao Phraya river, (where breakfasts are also had), the Mandarin Oriental is an institution in Thailand's hospitality scene.
