Overview
The Imaret, referencing a 'hostel for pilgrims' in
Turkish, was a gift of Mohamed Ali Pasha to Kavala,
the town of his birth. The Imaret rose as the most
famous school for Islamic theology in the Balkans,
coinciding with the last phase of the Ottoman
Empire. Its other social functions of the time
included being the premises for a soup kitchen and
later the accommodation for Greek refugees. The
Imaret is the only hotel in Greece to operate within
a historical building with a pedigree such as this,
distinguishing the Imaret in Kavala almost as a
destination unto itself.
