Overview
Nepal
has eight World Heritage sites and has won two
Heritage Awards. One for the Medieval City of
Bhaktapur and the other for The Dwarika's Hotel.
There's much to be said about the ethos behind
Dwarika's existence- the story of how the late
Dwarika Das Shrestha was out jogging
when he came upon some carpenters sawing off the
carved portion of an intricately engraved wooden
pillar. It had been part of an old building which
had been torn down to make room for a modern
structure. How the hotel provides employment to
skilled craftsmen- an art that would have otherwise
been lost.
Today,
the Krishnarpan restaurant( a must-visit even if
you're not staying there), hires hearing-impaired or
mute women as waitresses. Sitting down on the floors
(albeit on a slightly elevated platform for
foreigners not used to the way of eating) , with an
elaborate serving style and menu, a multi-course
dinner at Krishnarpan would be one of the highlights
for your stay in Kathmandu.
Kathmandu has long been a
fixation for what Conde Nast Traveller calls the
'dharma glitterati' set and the Dwarika's is where
they flock to. The main suite in Dwarika's comes
with a large roof terrace- reputedly hosting
guests from Clinton to Orlando Bloom during the
latter's tour of the country in support of
UNICEF-aided programs.
