Thesiger's Oman

  • Thesiger's Oman: Replicating Thesiger's journey through Oman, essentially condensing five years of his time spent in Oman into 10 days(or less). Given Thesiger's distaste for machines and whatever detracted from the kind of 'slow travel' that he favoured, a 10 day itinerary through Oman was going to be challenging.
  • Day 1: Dubai, Desert Palm. Enjoy a day of relaxation at the spa, watching a game of polo (or participating in one with prior arrangement) or some riding on the grounds of Desert Palm. If you prefer to be closer to town, there's no better base than the fashionable Park Hyatt Dubai. Shop for gold in Dubai's gold souks- the start of an elaborate shopping itinerary through the Middle East.
  • Day 2: Transfer to Muscat. Be transferred to the Chedi Muscat with its fashionably Orientalist design. Relax by the pools or dine by the fantastically romantic beachside restaurant at night(dinner not included).
  • Day 3: Transfer to Salalah. Salalah present an opportunity to shop for frankincense.
  • Day 4-7: Empty Quarters Spend a few days in the Empty Quarters, contemplating the silence of the desert and a possible intimation as to the number of religions that have originated here. You'll be based in luxury mobile camps- spacious tents Egyptian cotton sheets, attentive staff bearing cold, refreshing towels, daily sundowners and colourful cushions and discrete 'loo tents'- improbable luxury in the Empty Quarters.
  • Day 8-10: Transfer back to Salalah and onward flight back to Abu Dhabi. Be greeted at the airport in Abu Dhabi and transferred to Sir Bani Yas Island. Sir Bani Yas Island was first referenced in European literature as early as 1590 as 'Sirbeniast', by Venetian jeweller Gasparo Balbi as an island where pearls were frequently found
  • An Itinerary In reference to the three magi 'from the East', this trip could be tweaked to start in Iran, in accordance with Marco Polo's narration on the origins of fireworship in ancient Persia and his interpretation on the origins of the Three Magi and end in Jerusalem although due to the state of contemporary diplomatic relations, it might have to be a choice between Iran or Jerusalem!
  • Prices(Indicative Only) Staying at Desert Palm USD7006 pp Staying at Park Hyatt USD6838 pp Prices are based on twin sharing, minimum four to go and includes all transfers and Dubai-Muscat and Salalah-Abu Dhabi international flights as well as transfers to and from Sir Bani Yas island. Guests will be transferred to Sir Bani Yas on a Dash 8, returning via seaplane.
