lessons at the
hottest Latin
hotels. Or a
relaxing retreat to
the hills of the
Himalayas that
requires days of
travel, it's so
isolated?
You’ve
lived it up in London, found
romance in Rome, and even
wandered into a tourist trap
in Turkey. So what’s next,
you international traveler
you? You could take photos
of the Leaning Tower of Pisa
or eat brunch in Barcelona,
but that’s all been done
before. Why not try a little
something off the beaten
path? If you’re looking for
a bizarre travel suggestion
that doubles as an
incomparable life
experience, we suggest

Dive The Great Wall
of China with Urbane
Nomads
Did you know that
parts of the Great
Wall of China are
underwater? Yeah, me
neither. But
according to Urban
Daddy, one
particular section
of the wall has been
submerged under a
lake since the
1980's. And now a
luxury tour company
called Urbane Nomads
is offering the
first-ever guided
diving trips to the
hard-to-reach spot.
Guides will carry
your gear to the
submerged portion of
the Wall and direct
you to the coolest
underwater spots,
where you'll see
"Ming-era stone
carvings, some
intricate tunnels
and a tight-squeeze
guard tower". The
"Diving the Great
Wall" package
includes two dives
at the site plus
more exclusive
activities like a
guided tour to the
unrestored parts of
the Forbidden City,
usually off-limits
to tourists.
The group at Urbane
Nomads calls
themselves "travel
mixologists"
creating unique
itineraries that
customers can tweak
according to their
preferences while
still keeping the
main ingredients.
There's definitely
an emphasis on
luxury here, though
the company claims
that, unlike other
high-end tour
operators, their
tours seek to
connect visitors
with the local
culture (in a way
that is not staged
or touristy) rather
than isolating them
from it. In addition
to China, they offer
tours to over 30
destinations,
including Spain,
South Africa,
Afghanistan, Sri
Lanka, Bhutan, Oman,
Thailand, Turkey,
Laos, Morocco, and
Argentina.

Urbane
Nomads
is a travel agency
based in Singapore.
The agency bills
themselves as travel
mixologists,
offering unique
destinations,
pairing it with
'select
accommodation and
unusual travel
modes.'
Some of the tours
come 2009 include a
private jet tour
covering Golden
Triangle Thailand
and Myanmar, before
moving on to Putao,
a remote
north-eastern state
in Myanmar that is
notoriously
difficult to get to
due to the erratic
flight schedule.
Putao is at the foot
of the Himalayas,
where the lush
jungles of Myanmar
meet with the
climate and
mountainscapes of
the Himalayas. What
this results in is a
rich biodiversity
that includes red
pandas and clouded
leopards. Home here
too, are many tribes
including the Lisu,
Rawang and Naga as
well as the world's
only Mongoloid
pygmies.
Guests will be
staying in a luxury
resort designed by
Jean Michel Gathy of
Aman Resorts' fame.

What is a 'Travel
Mixologist'?
Urbane Nomads
is
a new site/operation
as far as I can
tell. They call
themselves ‘travel
mixologists.’ I
suppose what this
means after reading
their ‘about us’ is
that they create off
the road itineraries
for the well off.
I’m a little mixed
on Urbane Nomads
myself. I don’t
really admire
companies that
market themselves as
designer, mod and
upscale. But I do
admire any tour
outfit that can take
you on a 13 day tour
in Afghanistan. I
think this company
would be great for
MBA grads. They’ve
got money, they’re
young enough to have
a sense of design,
and some understand
that you have to get
off the beaten path
to see another (the
real) culture of the
place. And also…MBA
grads lack vision
and creativity in my
opinion. Either way,
Urbane Nomads has a
rather inconsistent
site with multiple
font sizes and weird
navigation. The map
is very cool, yet it
doesn’t do
much….like I
said…I’m still
feeling ‘mixed’.

Slightly worn around

Travel Advice from the
Internet
And from the neo-hippie vibe
of CouchSurfing to the ultra
hip 'travel mixologists' of
Urbane Nomads…. While the
goals of both the Urbane
Nomad and the CouchSurfer
are essentially the same - a
meaningful travel experience
that gets far beyond the
traditional tourist package
- it is hard to imagine
their ethos being more
different. If you’re bored
with brunch in Barcelona,
drinks in Dubai, and
nightclubbing in Negril and
are looking for something so
fresh and so clean (polo in
Pakistan?), I give you,
Urbane
Nomads.
