Overview

Gilgit, the Capital of the Northern areas of Pakistan, is a flourishing frontier town that has expanded rapidly to about 50,000 inhabitants since the Karakoram Highway (KKH) opened in 1978, connecting Gilgit with the rest of Pakistan and China. Gilgit town is the hub of Northern Areas. Its bazaars attract traders from all over Pakistan and China. A variety of languages are spoken as Chinese silk and chinaware, fabrics, handicrafts, foodstuff and spices change hands.

It is hot from May to September, pleasant in October and April and cold from November to March. The snow-covered peak of mighty mount Rakaposhi (6143 meters) stands guard at the eastern end of town, and a semi circle of barren peaks about 4,500 meters high enclose the valley on other three sides. Gilgit gets only about 130 millimeters of rainfall annually; so all agriculture land is irrigated with water from melting snows from higher altitudes.
