Of Ancient Kasbahs and Berber-style encampments

  • This itinerary combines the most glamorous outposts in the Atlas, the byword in exclusivity and taste in Marrakech, luxury camping in Ouarzazate and the Saharan desert before rounding off in the intellectual capital of Fez.

  • Day 1-5:Marrakech-

Stay the first two nights in the lush La Palmeraie area- replete with incredibly tasteful, grand North African visions channeling the water gardens of the Andalusians, the raw colourful aesthetic of North Africa with a chic cosmopolitan flavour. Horseriding, golf and visiting organic gardens are options whilst at La Palmeraie with a possible night trip to the equestrian spectacular of Fantasia(Chez Ali).

The last two nights will have you based close to the medina, in an exclusive boutique hotel.

Visit the Koutoubia Mosque, Yves Saint Laurent's Jardin Majorelle (which coined its very own shade of blue known as Majorelle Bleue) and the exquisitely restored Dar Si Said. You would not want to miss out on the shopping through the labyrinthine souks of Marrakech, ending the evening at the iconic Djemaa el Fnaa, with its Fellini-esque assortment of characters- fire-eaters, story-tellers, snake charmers, water sellers and acrobats.

  • Day 5-7 Atlas Mountains

Wake up early this morning and transfer to the Atlas Mountains, the fabled mountains of the Berbers spanning Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria. Based in the Kasbah Tamadot, located at the foothills of the Atlas mountains, possible excursions range from hot air ballooning (available from 1st September to 30th June) or trekking through the High Atlas, through oak and juniper forests and stopping in the local village for tea. (All activities in the Atlas Mountains are at extra cost).

  • Day 7-8: Ouarzazate

In a valley at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, Ouarzazate is a popular stopover for travellers en route to the Sahara desert. Its landscape strangely familiar even to those who'd never been to Morocco prior (Ouarzazate being the film capital of Morocco, being the backdrop for Star Wars, Kundun, Lawrence of Arabia and Alexander amongst others), Ouarzazate is forms an ideal base for many worthwhile day trips- from the fortified village of Ait Benhaddou. Situated on a hill along the Ouarzazate River, the village has also served as the site of Orson Welles' Sodom and Gomorrah. Based in the oasis, occupying the former royal hunting grounds of a sultan, your stay in Ouarzazate could(should?) include a day trip to the Valley of the Roses. You will be taking in dramatically different landscapes- from torrents of water gushing through the mountains, deep gorges and unyielding valleys, the excursion will be punctuated by a gourmet picnic and can be extended to include visits to old castles in the Gorges of Dades.

  • Day 8-10:Sahara

Today you'll move on to the Sahara, experiencing the Sahara's undulating dunes in ultimate luxury.

    Day 10-11: Ouarzazate

  • Day 11-13: Fez

The intellectual and royal capital of Morocco, Fez has a wealth of palaces and an intellectual tradition unparalleled in Morocco.

Considered one of the best preserved medieval cities in the Arab World, Fez straddles medieval and contemporary times, with notable theological schools, palaces, mosques and museums. Staying at the La Maison Bleue, you will be taking a day trip the next day to the Roman ruin of Volubilis and explore Chefchaouen- a quaint town with narrow alleyways and houses painted in various shades of blue.
