And from the neo-hippie vibe
of CouchSurfing to the ultra
hip 'travel mixologists' of
Urbane Nomads…. While the
goals of both the Urbane
Nomad and the CouchSurfer
are essentially the same - a
meaningful travel experience
that gets far beyond the
traditional tourist package
- it is hard to imagine
their ethos being more
different. If you’re bored
with brunch in Barcelona,
drinks in Dubai, and
nightclubbing in Negril and
are looking for something so
fresh and so clean (polo in
Pakistan?), I give you,

What the experts
suggest
Ms Hajar Ali,
founder of Urbane
Nomads
(tel:6728-8614,
www.urbanenomads.com):
"I'd recommend Sri
Lanka where you can
indulge in the
things mentioned:
affordable luxury,
bathing elephants,
camping under the
stars and watching
the sunset.
From Colombo, you
have a choice of
Galle in
south-western Sri
Lanka or any of the
beachside resorts in
between.
Make sure to head
for Yala National
Park and stay in one
of the lodges or go
on a mobile tented
safari for an
unforgettable
experience. There
are also eco-lodges
with a barefoot chic
ethos - houses made
of mud and lit by
hurricane lamps
after sunset. You'd
be able to indulge
in camping under the
stars in some
style."

What is a 'Travel
Mixologist'?
Urbane Nomads
is
a new site/operation
as far as I can
tell. They call
themselves ‘travel
mixologists.’ I
suppose what this
means after reading
their ‘about us’ is
that they create off
the road itineraries
for the well off.
I’m a little mixed
on Urbane Nomads
myself. I don’t
really admire
companies that
market themselves as
designer, mod and
upscale. But I do
admire any tour
outfit that can take
you on a 13 day tour
in Afghanistan. I
think this company
would be great for
MBA grads. They’ve
got money, they’re
young enough to have
a sense of design,
and some understand
that you have to get
off the beaten path
to see another (the
real) culture of the
place. And also…MBA
grads lack vision
and creativity in my
opinion. Either way,
Urbane Nomads has a
rather inconsistent
site with multiple
font sizes and weird
navigation. The map
is very cool, yet it
doesn’t do
much….like I
said…I’m still
feeling ‘mixed’.
East West Magazine
First, we had molecular
cuisine, now the concept of
travel is being repackaged
by Urbane Nomads, a
Singaporean travel company
with a difference. Urbane
Nomads seeks out the unique
in every destination (and
they seek out some pretty
unique destinations too!)
and bundle it with select
accommodation and unusual
travel modes. Take their
eight-day trip to Lebanon,
which combines visits to
historical sites with a
gourmand's tour of Beirut's
finest restaurants and an
after-hours itinerary to
keep you hopping all night.
The trip miraculously even
includes a day on Lebanon's
ski slopes.

Article Contribution- Pukka Magazine
Sri Lanka, for such a
compact country, plays host
to such diverse landscapes
and attractions that it's
possible to combine
experiences as varied as a
safari experience, beach
layovers, city stopovers,
cultural immersions and
retreats amidst lush
vegetation- typically things
you'd have expected to
travel multi destinations
for.
IUrbane
Nomads
is a travel agency
based in Singapore.
The agency bills
themselves as travel
mixologists,
offering unique
destinations,
pairing it with
'select
accommodation and
unusual travel
modes.'
Some of the tours
come 2009 include a
private jet tour
covering Golden
Triangle Thailand
and Myanmar, before
moving on to Putao,
a remote
north-eastern state
in Myanmar that is
notoriously
difficult to get to
due to the erratic
flight schedule.
Putao is at the foot
of the Himalayas,
where the lush
jungles of Myanmar
meet with the
climate and
mountainscapes of
the Himalayas. What
this results in is a
rich biodiversity
that includes red
pandas and clouded
leopards. Home here
too, are many tribes
including the Lisu,
Rawang and Naga as
well as the world's
only Mongoloid
pygmies.
Guests will be
staying in a luxury
resort designed by
Jean Michel Gathy of
Aman Resorts' fame.
