Whether it be tracing
the steps of Marguerite Duras in Saigon, doing your
best impression of Thesiger in the Empty Quarters of
Oman or staying in the same hotels and travelling on
the same railway (which he'd later famously bombed)
as Lawrence of Arabia, travel lores are haunted by
larger-than-life personalities who come to embody a
particular destination.
Reason, perhaps, why you might find yourself staying
at the Karen Blixen Camp or Elsa's (the lioness of
Born Free fame) Kopje in Kenya or finding yourself
going through the exact same motions, as, say,
Livingstone as he contemplated his next adventure
from the staging grounds of Zanzibar or simply,
sending a 'Gone To Patagonia' note to your employers
a la Chatwin!
