China | Raise the Red Lantern
China | Raise the Red Lantern: A 7 night itinerary of China, covering its ancient and contemporary architectural highlights- from stays in lavishly renovated courtyard homes deep in the hutongs of Beijing to alternative getaways in a winery in Xi’an owned by Qingyun Ma, one of China’s pre-eminent architects to a courtyard home originally belonging to a wealthy Qing dynasty silk merchant in the ancient city of Pingyao, the latter made famous by Zhang Yimou’s movie, ‘Raise the Red Lantern’. This would cover the trajectory of Chinese architecture- from the exquisite and best preserved traditional Han architecture in the UNESCO World Heritage City of Pingyao to the courtyard homes in Beijing, the new-world luxury of an alternative wine estate in Xian to modern, contemporary expressions of architecture in Beijing at the end of the stay. There are a few places that you need to visit now before it forever changes. Pingyao, ironically in a bid by the government to preserve its cultural sanctity, will be relocating its current inhabitants from the town. This itinerary showcases the cultural aspects of a luxury trip to China. Other possibilities include a trip detailing Chinese opera, riffing off the theme of Farewell My Concubine, upcoming Chinese fashion as well as traditional textile arts of China.
